Grooveshark Josh Greenberg co-founder dies at 28

A co-founder of Grooveshark, an early leader in music streaming recently closed under threat of crushing economic sanctions to record labels, has died at 28, police said Monday.

Josh Greenberg died at home Sunday night in Gainesville, Florida, the university town where he helped launch the site in 2006. The cause of death was unclear, but there was no evidence of foul play or suicide, said the Department Gainesville Police on Twitter.

Greenberg, who lived with a friend who was away for the weekend, had been planning new projects and was "more relieved than depressed" at the end of Grooveshark, his mother, Lori Greenberg, was quoted as saying by The Gainesville Sun .

Grooveshark was one of the first sites that offer unlimited music on demand, but, unlike the later platforms like Spotify, the company initially had some licensing agreements with record labels.

With his young entrepreneurship, Grooveshark had often been described as Thefacebook music, but his career was far less smooth. Grooveshark Greenberg and another senior executive, Sam Tarantino, had faced $ 736 million (approximately Rs. 4.691 million rupees) on penalties after a judge ruled last year that the leaders actively encourages employees to upload material copyrighted.

Instead of going to trial, Grooveshark, claiming 30 million monthly users darkened April 30 in an agreement with the major labels.

As part of the agreement, Greenberg and Tarantino offered a public apology and returned copyrighted files.

A third founder, Andrés Barreto of Colombian origin, Grooveshark stopped before its end and has participated in the creation of companies in the United States and Latin America.
