Amazon is best for the film industry, says the director of the Festival Cannes

The Cannes Movie Festival is opening the door partly for streaming video giant this year, allowing Amazon to make its debut on the Croisette, leaving Netflix outside its 69th annual session.

The festival director Thierry Fremaux said that the presence of Amazon is good news because its SVOD (streaming video on demand) service releases its films in theaters before being transmitted online.

The cinema industry prefers to have these so-called "windows" release - usually three months - when you can show the film exclusively. Netflix launches its movies simultaneously in cinemas and online.

"Amazon is disparate from Netflix. It's a real producer, distributor" he told Reuters before Wednesday's opening function. "They Woody Allen, but also some foreign films, so it is good news because thanks to them these films will be distributed," he said.

The festival will start with Woody Allen 'Cafe Society', one of five films selected in Cannes Amazon. Three of them have been collected for the main competition.

Nicolas Winding Refn of 'The Neon Demon "," Paterson "Jim Jarmusch and" Gimme Danger "and Park Chan-wook of' The Handmaiden are also Amazon. "The presence of Amazon is not significant (right) for the Cannes film festival, which is significant for the entire film industry," Fremaux said.

"I think it's good news about money, a new kind of money. Having Amazon buy four, five films is a very good sign showing the film is alive."

This year, Netflix and Amazon bought a total of 12 films at the Sundance Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival Screened Netflix 'Beasts of No Nation' last year.
