Twitter broadens character limit DM 140 to 10,000 characters

It seems Twitter is betting heavily by private courier. In his blog for developers, the company announced that would get rid of the 140 character limit on direct mail. Now will allow users to send direct messages that are 10,000 characters.

Now if you are wondering if your tweets will soon support more than 140-characters, then the answer is a clear "no". "You may be wondering what this means for the public part of Twitter. Nothing! Tweets remain the 140 characters that are today," the company wrote in a blog.

Needless to say, with the fierce competition in the space of messages with the likes of WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, the company that knows IM is a big problem in the future. However, the new changes will not come until July. Moreover, Twitter has some recommendations so that applications and services can handle longer messaging format. Blog users ask, "API additions review, update their GET requests so it will be able to receive all the text length DM and adjust their application UI to accommodate the text and DM.

Interestingly, this news comes the same day as co-founder Dick Costolo decided to resign as CEO. Co-founder Jack Dorsey, who served as CEO during the early years of Twitter, temporarily take the reins while the San Francisco company seeks a permanent replacement. Investors greeted the move with enthusiasm, boosting shares of Twitter to nearly 6 percent in late trading after the announcement Thursday afternoon. Both Dorsey and Costolo, however, expressed confidence in the leadership of the company and said the board does not seek big changes.
